URGENT!!! SCRATCHING FACE TILL IT BLEEDS!!!!

OVER THE PAST COUPLE WEEKS MY BULLY HAS BEEN SCRATCHING AT HIS FACE ON BOTH SIDES OF HIS CHEEKS. SCRATCHING SO BAD IT START TO BLEED. I HAVE PUT A CONE ON HIS HEAD AND MADE IT SO HE CANT SCRATCH BUT IF HE IS ABLE TO GET IT LOOSE HE STARTS TO SCRATCH IMMEDIATLEY. MY GROOMERS SAID IT COULD BE ALLERGIES AND THIS WAS THE TIME OF YEAR FOR THAT TO HAPPEN. SHE SOAKED HIM IN AN OATMEAL TREATMENT, BUT WE LEFT HIM OUTSIDE FOR A COUPLE HOURS YESTERDAY AND HE GOT HIS CONE OFF AND SCRATCHED AWAY. IT'S ONLY HIS FACE???? ANY RECOMMENDATIONS???

THANKS,

JAY & GUS

Samson does this EVERYDAY!

we have it controlled well enough to the point where he doesnt scratch himself till he bleeds.
We do Benadryl or Chlorphenimine (prescription antihistamine)
I also would do a check on his entire body and see if he has any tiny littel pimple looking bumps. Usually when i see those I know Samson will be itchy.

I also like Maleseb Pledgets to clean the face with if it is yeast that is making him itch.

If the dog has scratched himself bad enough that it bled and now stinks then its probably infected and a trip to the vet may be needed.

If it smells, it could be an infection...

they are prone to skin fold infections and if it has a smell then that's what it might be.

clean it, get it really dry and it might be worth the trip to the vet if its really smelly... bendryl is great to use if you know he's itching because of allergies or something else, but if you're not sure what the cause is then it will only mask the symptoms, much like over the counter meds will do for humans.

i definetly would not give him four benadryl's per day, that's alot and it can make them very drowsy...

FYI

I'm not sure if he has "hot spots" but I read in a book that if you feed your dog too much straight meat they will develop "hot spots" which they will scratch and scratch until they bleed.

I KNOW IT'S SO WIERD CAUSE IT JUST STARTED OUT

OF KNOW WHERE. I HOPE WE CAN NIP IT IN THE BUTT BEFORE HE RUINS HIS HANDSOME FACE!!!!!

I've seen the exact same tihng.

I've never been able to fully stop it - my 4 year old Mack does it all the time, the vet told me once that allergies are triggered by some threshold, which can be a combination of several things. It could be food and pollen, so its best to mitigate anything you can think of. I've tried changing his food with no luck. My Canola trick doesn't seem to work with him because he won't eat it once he smells the oil in his food. Mack has done it so much he looks like a wild beast.

THANKS A BUNCH!!!! I WILL TRY THE

BENEDRYL AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS EVER HAPPENED. MY WIFE SAYS SHE HAS BEEN WASHING HIS BLANKET IN THE SAME DETERGENT, SO THAT CAN'T BE IT. MAYBE IT'S SOMETHING IN THE AIR???? I HOPE IT STOPS CAUSE HE IS SUCH A BVEAUTY AND WHEN HE SCARS HIMSELF UP IT LOOKS AND SMELLS REALLY NASTY. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE ADVISE. I'M GOING TO CHECK THE CUBOARDS FOR SOME MEDS RIGHT NOW.

THANKS,

JAY & GUS

Benedryl

First of all, I would start giving some benedryl. 1 mg per lb 3 times a day. We usually give 2 tablets (25 mg each) in the morning and in the evening.

This helps quite a bit. Use neosporin to heal the wounds. Also, you can use a damp wash cloth to wash the face and clean folds and then dry. This will help if allergens like pollen and whatnot are getting on the fur.

Have there been any hives? Could there be a detergent or food allergy? Or do you think this is seasonal?

same here but it's acne and WARTS!!!

gross huh!!! but Winston has been scratching his face til it bleeds:( Its prob a combo of allergies, acne and now warts!!!! poor thing! the vet said they will just "fall off".... good luck!
