HELP, Newborn Trouble Latching to Teat

I have a 3 3 day old puppies. My first! Two of them are doing great on mom, however, I have one that I believe is getting a little dehydrated. What is going on is that this puppy makes a clicking noise when on mom and doesn't seem to be creating that "suction" that the others are doing. I checked the puppy's tongue and it is UNDER the teat. Puppies all poop and pee okay (which I am doing). When I pinch his skin around his neck, it is not bouncing back like the others.

Anybody experience this? What can I do to help this pup get this "suction" thing going?

Thanks for any help on this. I am kinda getting worried. Jeri

try some karo or nurtical on the nipple

before putting the puppy on the nipple. This will give a burst of energy for them to latch on. IF they dont latch on you need to bottle or tube, i would also top this puppy off with the bottle after each feeding, i do with all to make sure they are getting enough food.

Re: HELP, Newborn Trouble Latching to Teat

Hi
One of my babies had problems getting her suck going so this is what I did.

Sit on floor behind your bitch, then reach over and take a hold of the fleshy, milk filled part of the breast, (use one of the larger ones close to her back legs,) then gently but firmly push down towards the teat this forces milk out of the teat.
Practice the technique a few times without the pup on the teat until you get the hang of the pressure needed to express the milk, when you have got the hang of the getting the milk to come out put the pup on the teat.

If this doesn't work you may have to tube or bottle feed.

Mine loved nutrical and latched on great when used.

Good luck.
