Help - Hives? (long)

Once again our 3yr old male is broken out head to tail pocket in welts. They start out blister like and eventually scab over. He's losing hair in large patches around the welts. He scratches til they bleed in the places he can reach. We had a skin scraping done on a previous breakout and it's not mange. The vet wants us to keep him on prednisone, which does clear it up. I just can't believe it's good for him to be on steroids all the time. We have him on a hypo-allergenic diet (duck & Potato), use hypo-allergenic detergents etc. We did note that he seems to break out significantly after a bath. We've switched shampoos several times. Is it possible he's allergic to tap water?

These breakouts seem to occur roughly every 3 months and are varied in severity. The one he's going through now is the worse I've seen.

Agree--Micro Tek is the best we have found

I get it online at revivalanimal.com. Very inexpensive too.
I also agree that he may be allergic to the Duck and Potato. Brutus did horribly on that.
I wont give Brutus any steriods anymore. He has the same bumps all the time too. We just did a thyroid test yesterday. Results should be in sometime next week. We did a full panel.

Good luck. Let us know what the vet says

Allison & Brutus

Micro Tek shampoo....

Is excellent for hives and skin outbreaks.. And the Claritin for Hives works great.

RE: Hives

When Sammie was at his worst, he looked as if giant moths had attacked him! His fur fell out all over, and he had really irritated spots all over him. We tried changing his food, prednisone, Baytril, Pyoben shampoo, several skin scrapings, and nothing worked!! Finally, did a thyroid test, and..... he is hypothyroid. One little pill twice a day, and he is beautiful now. No more bumps, or sores. He is a happy boy! People are on thyroid meds for all of their lives, and do just fine. Insist on this simple test. Hope this will help.....

Enivironment

He gets Duck & Potato treats only. Same ingredients as his food. We do not use any pesticides and he spends very little time in the grassy area of our yard, just to do business. He spends most of his day sleeping in his bed or on the Flagstone side yard.

Next bath we will try no shampoo, just a good hose down. We had been using Malesab shampoo. It's been 2 months since his last shots.

I'm definitely going to get the thyroid test done. We have an appt. Friday a.m.

My two cents

Just because the food he is on is labeled hypo-allergenic does not mean your dog is not allergic to it. Every food is based on one or more kinds of proteins (ex. beef, lamb, chicken, etc.) The reason duck is labeled a hypo-allergenic food is because it is not as common and therefore your dog is less likely to have an allergic reaction to it. My boy, however, is allergic to duck and to venison. So if I would have used the duck and potatoe food he would have continued to break out in hives. The only way to be sure your dog is not allergic to his food is to test him. I also use clariten everyday. It works better than Benedryl for me. Hope this is a little informative.

Don't think it's the water.. have

you checked the treats or snacks he is getting.. or the yard has anything been put on the yard... check the whole enviorment... check the shampoo and stop using all shampoos on him for now.. what are you using on him.. any shots given lately..

Another thought

No, it is not good to have your dog on prednisone for a long time. Think that will mess up the immune system.(?)

RE: Hives

Please be sure that it is just hives. Sounds more like what my Sammie had.....have your vet do a thyriod test. No big deal, simple blood test, not that costly. Rule out thyroid problems.......then go from there. Sammie had a low thyroid level, and within 3 days of meds, he was fine. All of his fur has grown back in, and in fact, his coat is even better, and softer, than it was. Hope this helps........

Claritan Hives

Shelly has recommended this for hives. It is supposed to last all day. I've never used it, but I hope it helps.
