Blood Blister

Hi Everyone - I am new to this message board - posting that is - I have read it since I got Mack which is now about 10 months. He has a spot above his lip that appears like a blood blister. Any one familiar with this type of spot? Thanks to all of you - whether you know it or not - you all help with your advice and encouragement.

Re: Sounds much like "bulldog teenage acne"

That's why I read this site every night - Thank you so much.

Sounds much like "bulldog teenage acne"

which effects a number of dogs right around this same age...its a "pyoderma" that often comes from bacteria-contact like that from using a porous type food dish (plastic can get cracks/grooves that hide bacteria so we recommend ceramic or stainless steel...things that can also be disinfected in the dishwasher). Its most often found on the upper lip and under the chin...sometimes they are raised red bumps, sometimes they look like small blood blisters. You can try keeping his face drier (lots of paper towels) but the most effective treatment that I've found is using human teenage acne pads like Stridex or Oxydex. Use once or twice a day and should clear up in 1-2 weeks...they seem to outgrow this by age two. If you want to go to the vet for this, he will prescribe some antibiotics and some "special cleanser" but I and many others here feel that we don't want to use too much antibiotics for concerns that the dog gets too used to them and they become less effective when really needed...and the 'special cleansers' are basically some alcohol-type preparation very similar to what I've used. This is one bulldog problem where we "old timers" can save you some money and concerns.

can you post a picture or email one to me?

sometimes pimples look like that.
