Nose rope...

Hi, I have been looking at some pictures and noticed that puppies with a bigger nose rope have a rounder face when adults..where as the smaller nose rope have a longer face. Is that generally the case or was it just a coincidence. Also, is a big nose rope beneficial in shows? Just curious as a breeder here always brags about the size of the nose rope on her pups. Thanks.

the nose rope should make no difference in the view of the head

however a dog lacking a full rope can look like they are more nosey hten a dog with a large full rope.

As for the head being round or long with or with out a rope, had not factoring on the head at all.

I have had puppies with large ropes loose the rope when they get older, and had puppies w/o a rope get one as they get older.

Re: Nose rope...

Sorry, just to clarify, when I say rounder, I just meant larger in size (width from cheek to cheek).

Re: I agree.. nose rope does not make the head look round

Sorry, when I stated rounder I meant larger (Like wider from cheek to cheek? Does that make any sense? I'm new to all this so I do not know all the proper terminology.

I agree.. nose rope does not make the head look round

probably a coincidence.. KiKi has a large nose rope.. definitely wouldn't want any larger IMO.. but has a beautiful square head.

it looks like to hash marks on each side of the nose..

the rope does not continue over the nose

Re: Nose Rope

Now I'm still learning the standards of the breed but have never heard of a "split rope." What does that look like?

Nose Rope

should have nothing to do with the roundness or length of head. I think it probably was just a coincidence. A large nose rope may make the head appear round. The nose rope should not extend past the tip of the nose and should not obscure vision.

This is from the standard:

over the nose should be of moderate size,
neither extending beyond tip of nose,
obscuring the vision in any way, nor being
too large and out of proportion.>>

IMO a large nose rope is not a bragging feature. A correctly structured head and jaw would be something to brag about. A nose rope can cover up a nosey dog or help the appearance of a dog to not look too nosey.

My dogs with split ropes are much easier to maintenance then my girl with a the large nose rope.

Interesting!

I never knew about that and I can see why it would be easier face care. I LOVE the pictures, beautiful babies.

My question for the breeders and show people out there is... would this be considered a double rope? He is developing extra wrinkles on top of his rope- like a split rope on top of his solid one, and it keeps growing! Im really hoping it stops soon. Its close to getting in the way of his eyes! Also, would this be considered a bad thing in the ring? Too big? It isnt impairing his vision- yet. Just curious. I dont show him but he was the breeder's pick of the litter and she is so proud of how he turned out... I always wonder how he would measure up if I had gone that route with him. (Please excuse the pictures. Stacking him is a joke and he was trying to knock me down to eat the acorns on the porch this morning. Thats the best I could do on short notice- and his nails/bath is being done today!)

As for what I need help/opinions with... He developed tear stains and gunkiness under his rope on NB Potato and Duck so we switched him to NB Sweet Potato and Fish. The stains have all cleared up now and the gunk under his rope is now non-existant. I hardly ever have to clean it out, but I do swipe it occasionally anyway when I do the rest of his face. The problem I am having now is his wrinkles- on each side of his face/cheeks. They are red raw and if I clean them out in the morning, by that evening they are full of gunky (sometimes greenish in color) booger-snot looking slime. It really looks like snot. There is no other way to describe it- just sticky, boogery snot.

I have tried the Malaseb wipes but with his wrinkles being so raw, I know it stings and he HATES it. I have to corner him and tackle him to do it. sad.gif So... I have been cleaning them with a hot washcloth instead, and then patting dry with a towel or dry washcloth. Last night, I started putting a swipe of Bacitracin (antibiotic ointment I use with cuts/scrapes on the kids) on/in his wrinkles. This morning they look a tiny bit better.

Any idea what this is? Do I need to start him on antibiotics you think? The greenish color this snot stuff takes on and the fact that it wont go away makes me wonder if I should put him on the antibiotics. Any opinoins?

Beautiful PIc

both dogs are beautiful
can see the difference though in the pic

Hey thanks guys :)

You know how much I love these kids.

Wendy - I love this picture of Booger

It almost looks cartoonish. He turned into a very handsome young guy.

ickytazz's picture

his nose rope did not get bigger

his face has changed and his nose wrinkle fits his face better. It is not over his nose tip anymore, its is just as deep as it was when he was a puppy compaired to his face size. I would say he would have a double nose rope, but the top rope is a split rope.

I would clean his wrinkles daily, you can get some witch hazel and dry it daily on a cotton ball. Then put some OTC yeast infection medication on his wrinkle. It sounds like he is getting a yeast infection. Yeast grows in warm, dark, moist places. So keeping it dry will help, but you need to get the yeast gone. Put the yeast med on twice a day for a week and it should go away.

Hope that helps.

Bosco has a huge nose wrinkle, i clean it with a wipe a few times a week. Most of the time we let him be. It doesnt get bad, it is stained but not smelly and not a bother.

Re: Speaking of nose rope.... Vicky maybe you or someone else ca

Awesome pictures. That is a huge nose rope but it seems like its gotten smaller over time. (left pic). But you state its getting bigger so it must be the angle. From all the pictures I have seen it always seem like the nose rope is the one thing that doesn't change as the pup grows. Is this the experience with others? I have no experience as I only have a pup. Also, based on your puppy picture, and from the reasoning of starting this thread, I would have assumed Booger would have a larger/wider head than a pup with smaller nose rope. Am I crazy? =/
